Not Your Typical '80s Jam Pt. 1

This came up today while my iTunes was on shuffle. I did this mix to be given out at a party I did back in 2004. This was recorded at about 10am on a Wednesday in one session with just a stack of some of my favorite records from the '80s. The theme of the party and the mix was to highlight some of the '80s joints that get overlooked when people talk about "80s music" and to put in context with some of the more familiar classics. Enjoy!

another free mix to download....

This was playing in my iTunes earlier and I was really into the selection & the mixes so I checked to see who it was. Turns out that it was me! This part of a live session from a few years ago at that party Lil Dave & I did for a while. On this mix is some latiny funk, soul, & afro-beat. In case it matters to you, this happened to be all vinyl. Be sure to download the other live session from this party that I posted a while back. Go to the downloads section or click >> HERE <<

Warm Inside.... (old mix to download)

It's been really , really cold here on the east coast. so, I've just been hibernating and digging around in my cave. I've been looking for some files for my design portfolio and while doing so, decided to listen to some old mixes I've done. Here's a mix I did about 7 years ago. As you can guess, only vinyl, done in one take without any fancy editing or 4-tracking techniques. Any real DJ out there knows how hard it can be to actually mix lower tempo soul music and can appreciate hearing some of the roughness. By the way, the 'join CD tracks' feature in iTunes didn't work as well as expected so when listening to the mix here you'll notice a small skip where the tracks were. (sorry, I can't seem to locate the orginal disc with the full single track.) Use the download link to get the full zip file.

100th post...finally

Yeah, yeah, yeah...I know it's only taken a month but here it is finally. I have good reasons why it's taken this long though. Between teaching DJing classes to kids all summer followed by a 17 day trip to Japan I just didn't have enough time.

Originally I was going to do this big long post with tons of info but I'm just gonna keep this one brief. I had already had a nice post all typed up when Safari decided to crash. So, you're not even gonna get the good brief one..just scraps. Sorry :(

There have been some good changes to the site though which you may have noticed:

-More mixes in the player: you can't download these but there is enough music here to get you through your 9-5.

-Last FM player added:
This thing is awesome. I used the desktop software and it scanned my iTunes library (which is huge) and plays stuff based on that and makes similar suggestions for songs that aren't even in my library. You could listen to this thing for weeks on end and not get bored. Listen to it right on the site or use the pop out option to open it in it's own little window.

-Muxtape:
I want to make this a weekly updated list but I haven't got much feedback from this yet. So, for now it will just be updated periodically. When I see that more people are interested, it will get updated more frequently.

-Travels:
So, I finally went on a 'real' vacation. (I don't consider a day in NYC a vacation) The last time I got away from Philly was in 2002 when I went to Paris for 12 days. So it's been 6 years since my last vacation and it was well-deserved!! Japan was/is amazing and it wouldn't have been possible without a few solid connections that really helped me out. I'm not really caked up so with out them I couldn't have went at all. Ok, I'm lyin...I got more money than I know what to do with and though a long trip to Japan was a good way to spend some of it. I'll start posting some of my adventures from Japan next week.

-Events:
I don't go to a whole lot of events anymore compared to back in the day but I do go to some good ones. I'll start posting some of those soon as well. They won't be in any particular order but will be based more on when I'm looking through pictures.

-Diggin' At Home:
Over the last couple months I've recorded a bunch of my vinyl and am still in the process of making the mp3s (I'm one of those types that likes to have his music sounding proper so it takes some time with some records to enhance the sound). Here's a couple recent purchases and both are soulful disco bombs! You NEED these in your life...go buy them immediately!

New download: Live at Adidas Originals

Here's the first part of a session from the Adidas Originals store here in Philly. It's always weird to play these transient kinds of gigs but also a lot of fun since it's like spinning for several micro parties within the course of the set. It's too bad I didn't get a recording of my set from the Armani Exchange in-store I did a few months back. It was a weird day but the set was really good...isn't that always the case though- you play a great set and it's all just a memory. That is part of the beauty in the artform though...it can be either temporary or permanent. Basically DJing is the equivalent to graffiti. Yeah, aural graffiti. Ok, time for bed.

Another live session to download...

A couple of years ago my man Lil Dave (of Illvibe..click that giant link on the side of this page!) & I tried doing this party called 'High Postin'. Unfortunately, we didn't do the party for more than a couple of months but we have fun spinning together and we did get some good recordings.
Here's a short clip of me finishing out the night. I was more than a little tipsy by that point in the night so, maybe it's amazing that I could even operate turntables without spilling my drink on them!!

Another mix to download

Here's part of a session when I was playing at the Puma store in King Of Prussia. The volume was pretty low, no monitor, and those weak ceiling speakers. Scratch live really came in handy that day. There's some really great music on this recording so and I think you'll agree.

FINALLY...Mixes to download!!

I'm finally getting around to uploading some mixes available for download. These are mostly live sets but I'll put up some old mixes that I don't sell anymore. Hopefully you'll finally start to see some new mixes from me before the year's end. Until then, here's some oldies but goodies.

There's usually some good background information on these that I'll include if I have the time. Thanks for listening. These are both all vinyl mixes. I'll always prefer vinyl to Scratch Live but I like being able to play music I don't own yet on vinyl.
