PPP Abundance

Big up to Wajeed, Bling 47, Platinum Pied Pipers, etc... for making some of the best music so far in the 21st century. The first release back in '05 was without a doubt one of the top 5 albums that year. Now, after much anticipation, the new album by Platium Pied Pipers (Wajeed, Saadiq and guests) dropped their Abundance album on January 20th. A couple of the songs are on this free download mixtape. Also, some DOPE remixes of older stuff. YOU NEED THIS! Go buy the album too!

I Want Your Soul

Now in the last post we saw one extreme of this new generation of house/techno..but we also have the " Ol' Heads " to consider. Dudes like Armand Van Helden can get away with doing some retro hip-hop shit because he IS hip-hop. Sure, he's made his money in the house scene but real heads know, he was a dope hip-hop producer first. I guess that's why a lot of his tracks have that edge to them. This dude has been one of the most consistent and prolific producers in the last 20 years. DON"T SLEEP! This first video came out last year I believe and is pretty dope. I gotta admit though, I rarely played the original...the Jesse Rose remix just bangs harder and worked better on the dance floor.

However, I still play this next track out every-so-often and it STILL gets people moving even if they've never heard it (I know that's hard to believe...). Bonified classic in every sense of the word. Any respectable DJ playing disco should know the sample instantly. The raw edit of this track is crazy too.

Here's a bonus.. If you're a "DJ" and don't own the song that was sampled for this on vinyl you should just quit! hahaha..

Weird video of the week (January 30)

What's up with the Ms. Melody look-alike trying to sing over techno beats and molesting muppets? IDK either which is why it wins the coveted title. If broken vases and flying flowers is your thing, this video is for you. On a side note, what's up with everybody that isn't hip-hop trying to look like an extra from 'I Ain't No Joke' shoot? I really need to know! Ugly neon colored everything wasn't that fly back then and is even worse now! (because it's like soooo ironic)

Lemurs

No, not the animals from Madagascar (and other places). I'm talking about this new music interface. Lemur is like a combination of Tenori-On, Monome and iPhone. Ok, maybe that's a bad description. But the retro-future interface is definitely inspired by Tron and Star Trek. From what I could see in a few short videos, this interface could add to the changing face of music for the better. It can basically do about 5zillion things. (but no more than that) Just go to JazzMutant's website to learn more. And watch the video below..and watch more of the ones on YouTube, you'll be sold on it instantly. You'll see that you can customize it to your liking, add more screens, control EQs, adjust sensitivity, make music on the fly, etcetera...It's DOPE and I want one...

Record Player Tattoo

I saw the owner of this tattoo at a bar this summer. She was happy to let me take a picture of it and to my amazement was/is not a serious collector. She just liked the design. Probably because of the Bobby Caldwell 45 on the platter. What she won't do for love?

Diggin' At Home (digital edition: Modernization)

Over the last few weeks I've added a MASSIVE amount of new music to my fairly large digital collection (over 10gb to the existing 35k songs) As I have time I'll be sharing some of these new gems with you and continue to share a little of my existing collection. I just imported some deep funk/soul stuff and one of the first songs I clicked on was this monster disco gem taken from Keb Darge's Legendary Deep Funk volume 2. It's funny because I've actually had the 7Samurai edit of this for about 6 months and only played it a few times and forgot about it until now. The original is where it's at though:

Sons Of The Kingdom "Modernization"

BUY IT

This next tune is a new song that addresses the similar issues but after we've been 'modernized' for more than 30 years since the release of the previous song. This whole album by Beck is definitely worth the money. Maybe one of the best albums of 2008?

Bikers Revenge

This clever little intention is by two devilishly brilliant students at University of the Arts here in Philadelphia. Keying up your enemy's car just got way more fun. This may also prevent asshole drivers to think twice before cutting you off or driving too close when they have plenty of room! They explain it better in 'designy©' talk (remember, I copyrighted that term!)Only $5 + shipping for a pair of these! I'm buying some!!

"These modified handlebar plugs speak to the disgruntled urban cyclist. By retro-fitting stock parts with up-cycled keys, bikers can now find satisfaction with close encounters. This concept puts an new twist on the timeless tradition of car-keying revenge." by Matt Braun and Jared Delorenzo

The Impossible Project

Yeah, this is a tough one. The brief is to get instant film back into production in less than 12 months. They actually have the equipment which they acquired from a company that manufactured it for Polaroid and have contracted former employees and scientists that worked with Polaroid. So, the real challenges are reducing the cost, distribution and marketing. The cameras are no longer made of course so you can imagine the difficulty in doing this large-scale production.

Go to the site- The Impossible Project

How'd dey do dat?

"Yoshimoto discovered this cube when he was searching for a way to divide a cube equally in three-dimensional space. The result is a peculiar polyhedral dyad consisting of eight interconnected cubes that can be opened in multiple ways. The cube can be divided into two cubes and then transformed into two rhombuses, one silver the other gold with twelve faces each. With its endless transformations, this cube makes a great toy for children as well as an intriguing desktop puzzle. Made of polypropylene."

Noisy posters

I know, it's weird to post two advertising campaigns back to back (without getting paid for it) but I just found this and thought you should see..err, hear it for yourself. These were done by a Brazilian firm called DM9DDB for sound production company called Saxofunny.

Because We Can ad Campaign

This campaign was done by The Glue Society. They do some pretty cool/arty stuff...check out more work at their site.

I can explain..

Scientists seem to be confused about these 'mysterious' columns of light appearing in the night sky of Sigulda, Latvia. I have carefully examined the pictures online and can say that aliens are definitely here. Those are obviously beams of light from alien spacecrafts. Trust me, I'm an expert. The real question is why they decided to reign down on Latvia? Click HERE to see more evidence and read the article.

it's a bird!..it's a plane!..nope, it's a person!!??

This looks totally insane and really fun! I want to try this someday.

Warm Inside.... (old mix to download)

It's been really , really cold here on the east coast. so, I've just been hibernating and digging around in my cave. I've been looking for some files for my design portfolio and while doing so, decided to listen to some old mixes I've done. Here's a mix I did about 7 years ago. As you can guess, only vinyl, done in one take without any fancy editing or 4-tracking techniques. Any real DJ out there knows how hard it can be to actually mix lower tempo soul music and can appreciate hearing some of the roughness. By the way, the 'join CD tracks' feature in iTunes didn't work as well as expected so when listening to the mix here you'll notice a small skip where the tracks were. (sorry, I can't seem to locate the orginal disc with the full single track.) Use the download link to get the full zip file.

mmmmm....Hot Dogs

I don't know who the sicko is that's about to eat this but it's really disturbing. That thing should be gutted, cleaned & cooked first! And at least put some mustard on it! What? Dogs are delicious! Many cultures, including the Chinese, have been eating dogs forever. It's not like eating your pet or 'best friend'! (it's like eating your neighbors' ;) Oh, like I'm the only person who's ever eaten their neighbors' dog!? Well, whatever...we're in a recession and times are hard. Think of all the gas & money I save by hunting local domesticated wildlife instead of driving to the food store.

This is just wrong!

Umm...shouldn't there be 2 girl & 1 dude here instead of 2 dudes and 1 girl? Or, at least 2 condom balloon animals that aren't blowing and fucking each other?! This stroke of brilliance was done by SuperFad. You can see other stuff they've done on their site.

Before I die I want to own at least one high-end turntable. (Technics 1200s are NOT high-end!) Of course I'll also own some of the portable turntables I really want by this point too. And maybe one or two of some old classic turntables I really want. But until those days come..we got pictures. You can see more stuff you can't afford at the company's website- Transrotor

N.A.S.A. "Money" video

I'm always amazed when great artists come together to make crap. How does this happen!!?? The video is pretty cool though even if it is just a big advertisement for Obey and Shepard Fairey. I am pretty disappointed because I really love David Byrne and Seu Jorge.

more naked lady artwork..

Remember the post from the summer with those beautiful paintings using naked ladies? (click here for reminder) Well, here's some newer work by Korean artist Kim Joon. He's made these great wall papers on naked people and incorporates logos from Big international brands. I'm not sure if they're commissioned works or a statement about corporations branding our identities as humans. His work is mainly digital prints using his original body paintings as the source. Really good stuff. Check out more of his work at KimJoon.co.kr

the work of Felice Varini

I first stumbled upon this man's work a little over a year ago and got more into him while researching for a project. His compositions are usually just very simple geometric patterns. What's fascinating about his work is the execution scale of some of his projects. I was surprised not to see his name mentioned in a New York Times Magazine article last year about another artist that does similar work...shame on you NYTM editor! haha..Varini is not a big name in America though and the majority of his work is in Europe.
You can see more of his work at Varini.org

Here's one of several videos of his work on YouTube>>>

shocking..

For over a century people have been trying to find inventive ways of electricuting themselves at home. Well, finally a group of socially conscious designers have developed an adapter specifically for sticking your fingers in the socket. No longer will you need to worry about fiddling around with forks or wire.
You can find out more about this at the designer's site- ArtLebedev.com

Simplicity isn't always simple..

John Maeda is one of the great designers and visionaries of our time. He's also known to be an entertaining speaker. I've seen a few of his talks on line and saw him in-person last year. Anyway, this dude is amazing. He's one of the most accomplished artists of our time and somehow manages to have a healthy family life with five daughters, is the recent president of RISD, has degrees in computer science, design and business and is just an all-around interesting character. Imagine if him and Neri Oxman got together on a project!? Maybe they'd make a fabric that behaves like a banana peel?! who knows...

Check out his company- MaedaStudio

no, maybe this is the perfect woman..

This one is actually a 'real' woman and not android although she may as well be. She is extremely brilliant and beautiful. Her name is Neri Oxman and if you're geek or just into material science, architecture, design or art you already know the name or at least her work. I forget name pretty easily unless I'm reminded again. In this case, when I was reminded it was one of those, "Duh! Of course I know her work!" kind of things. Amazingly, she's still working on a pHD in Design & Computation from MIT. Her body of work is very extensive and her list of awards and achievements is probably as long as she is tall. She's studied all over the world, been showcased in Seed Magazine and featured in nearly any architecture or design magazine around the world, been in shows at museums around the world, spoke at several lectures and somehow stays very grounded. Perhaps it's her medical background and growing up in Israel? In any event, she is destined to become one of the major players in architecture, design and material science in the 21st century. So what does she do?

" M A T E R I A L E C O L O G Y was formed in 2006 by Neri Oxman as an interdisciplinary research initiative that undertakes design research in the intersection between architecture, engineering, computation, biology and ecology. As such, this initiative is concerned with material organization and performance across all scales of design thought and practice. Material is interpreted merely as any physical entity which corresponds and reacts with its environment. As such, it seeks to promote and define a design research agenda which is ecological in nature, in ideology and in material practice; it aims at embracing the evolving elements of change in both (and indeed related) social constructs and environmental descriptions of the ever changing built environment."

For a proper explanation of what she does, just go to her site- MaterialEcology

the perfect woman!!..almost :( *

Aiko is a Japanese girl built in Canada that can do almost anything for you and doesn't forget anything. The only major issues with this chick are that she requires a charge ever few hours and doesn't walk. From what I could tell, she can be a bit of a pain, but you could program her to your liking. Oh, and NO SEX! I don't know why someone would ever make a woman like that!!?? However, it's a lot cheaper than a real wife would cost that did give you sex- only $28,000 for the current model. Compare that to the millions you'll spend over a lifetime trying to convince your real wife to sleep with you once a year! She does speak Japanese and English though but her English isn't very sexy. She is the product of a lifetime of work by 'genius' (psycho) Le Trung.
*Disclaimer: In case you can't tell, I'm kidding! Some people get real crazy about this kind of humor for some reason.?

Read more about Aiko at her website- ProjectAiko.com

“Aiko is what happens when science meets beauty. I want to make her look, feel and act as human as possible so she can be the perfect companion.

I talk to her a lot, and hope to improve her knowledge. So far, she can understand and speak 13,000 different sentences in English and Japanese. She recognizes faces and says hello when any of my family come around to visit.

She helps me pick what to have for dinner and knows what drinks I like.

She even helps me with directions when we’re going somewhere. She has all senses except for smell, a is very patient and never complains,” says Mr. Trung

(this is a weird picture...she probably beat him up for this!)

That's it, I'm leaving this country..

For years now I've been wanting to leave America for many reasons. It's not that I'm anti-American in anyway. The problem is that our system has failed us all miserably and I for one just cannot see myself ever living a comfortable life here. This movie somewhat helps to justify my decision to leave. Why stay in a country that will most-likely not get better in my lifetime? Just watch...this is one of several documentaries about this issue that I've seen and since it's the most current, I'm posting this one..
